Cedar Looks by Rustic Natural Cedar Log Childs Chair

Shopping for children can be a bittersweet experience. There are so many fun and cute things available for infants and children, and the excitement over the “oooh-ing” and “ahhh-ing” can put you in the mood to fill your cart. You smile when you imagine how adorable Little Molly will look in that outfit you found and how much Little Bobby will love that rattle.

The reality is, most of the things you buy for children are grown out of, cast aside, or replaced by new toys in a short amount of time. In my personal experience, I have been amazed at just how fast a child grows. One day he’s wearing an outfit and a few days later he has outgrown it. I have become quite a fan of children’s consignment stores, mega sales, garage sales, and hand-me-downs.

Hand-me-downs are great to give and to receive. I love to gather up items that I haven’t used, won’t use, or that my son has outgrown, and pass them along to friends that can get more use out of them. In a sense, it is a way of passing love and helping it to grow with each additional child who gets use out of the items. Through this process, we nurture the development of children other than our own.

You can start passing the love in your own family. Children’s furniture can only be used for a short while, but it is precious and cherished because of the memories it holds. When a new baby comes along, you can arrange a child’s rocking chair beside the one you rock new baby in. Then brother or sister can “help” put the baby to sleep. When everyone has outgrown it, the sturdy little log rocking chair can be passed along to the next generation for many more years of rocking. Instead of setting up a card table and booster chairs for the children at holiday dinners, invest in a children’s table and chairs. Not only can they eat dinner there like the “big kids”, but they can do before-dinner crafts and after-dinner games together. Years down the road, your kids can tell their kids stories about all the fun that had at that very same table. On the porch, add a few children’s log outdoor chairs to your outdoor seating arrangement. Kids will appreciate being included in the conversation and they can even invite some of their friends to join in the camaraderie.

When you have little people in your life, shopping takes on a new meaning and maybe even becomes a little more fun. Don’t despair about how fast children grow out of things; instead, embrace the “hand-me-down” process. Your friends and family will receive years of love and enjoyment from the items you pass along.

Blowing Things into Proportion

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Log homes have a large amount of a lot of things: character, grandeur, beauty…and open space. If you live in a log home, chances are good that it has an open floor plan and cathedral ceilings. While that open air allows a lot of natural light to filter inside and provides a breathtaking view of the major living areas of the home, it also presents some challenges for decorating.

Breaking up a space that large with furniture involves sitting back, analyzing the area, and mental imagery. Because there are a limited number of walls to physically break up the room, you must instead do it with strategically placed pieces of furniture. If you want to create a seating area around the fireplace, sofas, chairs, and coffee and end tables can be placed in a horseshoe arrangement in front of the hearth. A few feet away, to distinguish the dining area from the rest of the room, you situate a dining table with dining chairs a logical distance from the kitchen island. One key factor to keep in mind is the scale of the furniture in comparison to that of the room. In order to keep a large open room from feeling too overwhelming, use large and overstuffed furniture and heavy, sturdy dining pieces. Multiple groupings of furniture pieces also assist in breaking the room up into separate areas.

On the flip side of this coin, the rooms in which you are placing your furniture may be very small. Of course, the pieces you use must be considerably smaller than those you’d see in a large, open air room. It is also helpful if the small room pieces have multiple functions, such as a log futon that opens into a bed and a sofa table that can double as a small desk. By creating a room that can be used as an office, reading area, or spare bedroom, you create many uses in one room without adding additional furniture that can clutter your small home.

Whatever the size of the room that you are decorating, take the time to stand back and analyze the space. Get out the measuring tape and draw out the dimensions before purchasing furniture for the room. Close your eyes and imagine how the room will look once you add the furniture you selected. By slowing down and preparing for your furniture, your final result will be an area that is proportionally pleasing.

The Prettiest Place Around

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

While visiting my parents this holiday season, I busied myself in some of my spare time with glancing through the stack of magazines my mother keeps by her chair in the living room. One of the magazines I thumbed through highlights rural living, and an article they include in every issue is a section that is dedicated to a farmstead considered “the prettiest place in the country”.

Images of these beautiful farmsteads can take a reader’s breath away. Expansive lawns of green, flowers blooming in every nook and cranny, barns painted bright red with bleach white trim, and an immaculate farmhouse as the centerpiece. Whoever chooses the feature farmstead must have a difficult decision when determining the “prettiest place” winners. It is quite an honor if you have your farmstead printed on the magazine’s glossy pages.

You may not live on a farmstead, or even in the country, but yours can be known as the prettiest place around. Fertilize and consistently mow your lawn to make it green and lush. Take notes from those featured in the aforementioned rural magazine and plant flowers around your home in pretty planters and other unexpected places. If you have a porch, decorate it with rustic log outdoor furniture and make it comfortable with outdoor pillows and accessories. Carry the rustic theme indoors with some log furniture placed throughout the living and dining rooms. Add a touch of whimsy with some unique accent furniture. Display your treasures and collections with sturdy shelves and hutches.

Pretty places are about more than just furniture and flowers. They are created with love and tender loving care. Keeping your place immaculate takes some hard work and dedication, but with the right combination of furniture, accessories, love, and care, your home can be known as the prettiest place around…magazine feature or not.

Cookin’ It Up Cabin Style

North Woods Custom Kitchen Cabinets, Model # NWCKC

During the holiday celebrations at this time of the year, there is likely one consistent factor: eating. Whether we gather with friends or family, coworkers or clients, conversation usually occurs along with a meal. Since the holidays are a time filled with spending time with loved ones, we frequently hold parties and prepare meals in anticipation of providing plenty of food for our visitors.

Holiday parties invite visitors into many different rooms of the house. There may be a log bar in an area of the home where libations are served to guests, or an inviting seating area in the living room where partygoers settle in to chat around an expansive log coffee table covered with festive treats. At some point during the course of the party, most of the guests take a turn chatting it up in the kitchen, perhaps taking a seat on a log stool pulled up to the island or leaning on the counter.

In order to prepare the feast for your party and to store all of the serving dishes and utensils needed for the food, you must have plenty of cabinet and counter space. Custom log cabinets can be ordered in an appropriate style and design for your cabin décor. If your home already has an established kitchen but needs more cabinet room and serving space, consider adding a log island in the middle of the kitchen.

An efficiently designed kitchen is a necessity all times of the year. During the holidays, your cabin kitchen becomes the center of your party’s attention. Be sure that you are cookin’ up the goodies in a kitchen that is both spacious and stylish. Happy holidays!

Christmas is for Cabins

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Aren’t Christmas decorations one of the best things about the holiday? They are so beautiful and festive, lovely scented evergreen boughs with twinkling lights interspersed. Something as simple as a pine wreath with a big red bow can put me in a better mood immediately. The simplicity of such a wreath speaks warmly of the true meaning of Christmas.

Greenery makes any location look festive, but it takes on a homey holiday charm when it is hung outside of a cabin. Maybe the timber of the log home is happy to see some of the boughs it lost, or maybe when both parts of the tree are rejoined they create their own special kind of holiday magic. Whatever the reason, a cabin adorned with Christmas decorations looks and feels like the perfect holiday setting.

A great place to begin festooning the cabin is by hanging swags of pine boughs on the deck and porch railings. Well-placed bows accentuate the delicate needles of the greenery. Outdoor planter boxes can be filled with evergreen boughs and twinkling lights for a nice holiday accent around your entryway. For a romantic touch, hang a nice sprig of mistletoe from the top of the garden arbor. Don’t forget to bring the outside in by placing a vase of pine sprigs on your coffee table. Use more of those sprigs and perhaps some additional twinkling lights to create a dazzling centerpiece on your dining room table. And, perhaps of utmost importance, designate the best location in the cabin for the Christmas tree. The tree should be able to be enjoyed from every seat in the house.

This Christmas, enjoy the simplicity cabin decor in your home for the holidays. The time you spend hanging pine boughs is best enjoyed with family and friends, maybe followed by a nice mug of hot cocoa. And remember, all homes look wonderful when wrapped in greenery. But, in my honest opinion, Christmas greenery looks best when hung on cabins.

Snuggly Snow

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Cottage Chair-and-a-Half, Model # 13020-65

It’s December; have you seen your first snowflakes yet? Depending on where you live, Old Man Winter may have brought significant snow your way already, or you might only dream of snow falling in your tropical location. And for those of you who have never seen snow before, you do not know what you are missing.

I am not a fan of the cold but I do love snow. There is something so peaceful and soothing about those big fluffy flakes falling out of the sky. The perfect snowfall happens on a still night…snowflakes drifting down so slowly, sounds muffled everywhere quieting the world to a peaceful hush in the darkness. For all the hassles of traveling in the snow, it sure can be a beautiful thing to behold and to play in.

The first snow of the year is an exciting time for those of us who love the white fluffy stuff. We wait with baited breath, listening to the weather man on the evening news and hoping that he is going to predict snowfall. Some news channels even have first snow contests. And then, when it finally happens…the world stops for a moment and we revel in the beauty of nature. It’s almost like we have a party in our homes to welcome our winter visitor.

The best seat in which to admire the snow is from a vantage point in our log living room. Nestled into a comfy lounge chair with a cozy blanket on our lap and our faithful dog curled up in his bed beside us, we are warmed by a roaring fire and a cup of hot cocoa. A peaceful calm settles over us as we fall into a trance-like state; hands around our warm mug, watching the flakes drift lazily past our windows. For the time being, we don’t think about the shoveling and clearing and traffic hassles that will follow. We just snuggle in, enjoy the beauty of winter, and look forward to the sledding and snow angels that we will indulge in later.

Thrifty Holiday Shopper

Clearance & Specials at JHE's Log Furniture Place

I used to be a carefree spender. Perhaps it was the immaturity of youth or the lack of financial experience, but I figured that if I had money in my checkbook that I could spend it. When there wasn’t enough money in my account, I occasionally threw down some plastic. I didn’t think too much about a savings account, or putting money aside for a rainy day. I figured that if I wanted something (or, in my case, I “needed” it), then I should purchase it.

By now, my outlook has changed considerably. I am still learning about how to be a thrifty shopper, but am happy to report I am well on my way. The economic downturn that our country has been facing the past few years has certainly changed the spending habits of many Americans. The lifestyle changes my husband and I have experienced since we married have played a large part in my financial transformation.

Now I consider it a great thrill to find a discount item in the store, shop a great sale, see the total amount drop with every coupon used, find a treasure in a thrift store, or discover the ultimate bargain while “curb shopping”. My distaste for shopping and consternation with seeing the amount due rise with every item scanned has abated somewhat.

If you are shopping for heirloom quality rustic furniture but are concerned about its price tag, you need to check out JHE’s Log Furniture Store. Bargains abound on this website! They are easy to find when you click on the “Specials and Free Items” icon, located on the home page. Many items are available at clearance prices, including bedroom sets, outdoor furniture, living room pieces, even a log pool table. When you shop this clearance section and click on the checkout button, you will be smiling. Not only will you be expecting top quality log furniture to be delivered to your home for free, but your pocketbook didn’t take too hard a hit in the process. Branching Out

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Meyda 48"L Twigs 6 Light Chandelier, Model # 108758

Log homes are a reflection of Mother Nature’s abundant beauty. Open, full log rafters are a trademark of log home interiors. Other features are a reflection of the home designer’s taste. One such detail is the use of branches throughout the home.

Twigs or branch details can be seen as exterior decoration in the gables or in the railings of decks and porches. Not only is this an attractive way to add visual interest to the home, but it is also an effective way to utilize more of the trees that had to be felled for use in construction. The gnarled, twisted appearance of the branches adds another rustic element to the log home.

The character created by twig and branch details can also be carried into the home’s furnishings. A twig chandelier adds a unique pop of light into the dining room. Twig panels incorporated into chairs and beds are functional as well as beautiful. Because the branches are small and variably placed, they provide a natural mesh to hold arms, cushions, and bed sheets effectively in place.

You may love log furniture but desire to add something more unique to your collection. Consider branching out and bring a piece with twig details into your bedroom, living or dining room. Not only will you be using more of the original tree, but celebrating nature’s bounty in a new and interesting way.

Thankful for Logs

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Thanksgiving is a holiday set aside for reflecting on all the things that we are thankful for. During our busy lives, it is easy to take our good fortunes for granted. Our American lifestyle is one that drives us to constantly want more instead of realizing how much we already have. Thanksgiving is the one time of year we are reminded that we should check in and remember all the things that are going right in our lives.

Every person has their own list to run through on Thanksgiving Day. Some make it a family tradition to go around the dinner table and share their thankfulness with all the friends and family in attendance. Others sit in solitude, reflecting on their list and what the day means to them.

Don’t forget to be thankful for logs this Thanksgiving. Your log furniture deserves your gratification. A sturdy chair, a rustic coffee table, a primitive TV stand are all pieces that make a dramatic impact in your home. Not everyone can afford heirloom furniture such as yours. Some people love log furniture but are afraid to make the jump to incorporate it into their homes. If you are one of the lucky ones who own log furniture, be thankful this Thanksgiving. As you sit around the table or relax alone on the sofa, don’t forget to be thankful for the very piece you are sitting on.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Childs Play

Rustic Natural Cedar Log Childs Chair, Model # 4JR

We spend a lot of time talking about our love of all things rustic. We adore log furniture for many different reasons and throughout all the seasons. Not only is it comfortable and casual, but it epitomizes the ambience we want to project both inside and outside of our home. We welcome friends and family to visit and enjoy our furniture as much as we do.

What we don’t talk a lot about is providing the same casual comfort for the little ones in our home. Johnny Jr. may be a toddler but he still has an appreciation for a great chair. The wonderful thing about log furniture is that not only is it timeless in its beauty, but it can take a lot of abuse and emerge none the worse for the wear. This characteristic alone makes log furniture perfect for little ones.

Your child’s friends can enjoy his log furniture just the same as your adult friends enjoy yours. The Montana Child’s Log Table and Chairs allows Johnny and friends to sit together to draw, read, or play games. When it’s time to relax, the kids can nap in the Montana Glacier Country Childs Log Rocker and dream of playing hide-and-go-seek in the woods. When the weather is nice outside, Johnny Jr. can stake his claim in the yard with his very own Rustic Natural Cedar Log Childs Chair.

Even though we love to dream about the rustic log furniture that we are going to decorate our living rooms and bedrooms with, don’t forget about the kids. Johnny Jr. may not fully appreciate it today, but years down the road he will love the log furniture you bought him as a toddler. The child’s log furniture that you purchase today will endure a lot of abuse and still be around for your children’s children to play on.
