Prim and Proper

These dining room tables will be a fine addition to your designWhen it comes to decorating, some people may say that my style is confusing.  My house is a combination of contemporary, traditional, country, and primitive pieces.  Some are remainders of a more favored style in the past, pieces that I do not want to spend the time or money replacing yet… so they remain a part of our décor.  However, the majority of the knickknacks and treasures that decorate our home are the result of one of my shopping trips to the local thrift store or a find that caught my eye at a craft show.  I collect the things that “speak to me” and beg me to take them home, especially if I consider the item to be a good deal.

Decorative items of varying styles can effectively share the space in a house.  With the right amount of accessories that assist in harmonizing the obvious differences, a “melting pot” decorating style can appear seamless and develop a unique character for a home.  Fabric placemats, crocheted doilies, or woven rugs soften hard edges.  Bright colors are muted and easier on the eye when combined with neutral or earth tones.  Surfaces such as glass and steel take on a warmer and welcoming feel when paired with natural materials like wood or grass.

If you enjoy a mishmash of styles better known as eclectic decorating, log furniture is perfect for you.  Its natural beauty can provide a rustic balance to the hard lines of more contemporary pieces. The primitive look of the logs creates a cozy atmosphere in the home.  Pieces such as the Cedar Lake Lodge Log Dining Table also have a polished presence.  Fancy and spacious enough to host a holiday dinner, yet casual and intimate enough for the family’s evening meals, this table provides the perfect combination of primitive and proper.

Perfecting Our Craft

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like women are always looking for an excuse to get together.  It may be a game of cards, jewelry or cooking party, coffee club, or a group that has something to do with red hats, but we ladies like to attach an “official” purpose to our social gatherings.  When men gather under one roof, they seem to refer to their time together as “just hanging out”.

The fairer sex also likes to plan an agenda for these social gatherings.  Sure, wine and food are usually present but we also like to plan an activity or two that all the ladies can participate in.  Scrapbooking is a common reason to get together, where everyone shares their tools and supplies while they indulge in some food and drink.  Product parties are also very popular.  Catalogs for items such as cooking utensils, jewelry, candles, and home décor are passed around just as fervently as conversation and good jokes.  Men, on the other hand, commonly gather around the television with the simple purpose of taking in a sports event, nachos or pizza, and a few pints of beer.

A friend of mine recently had a new idea for a ladies’ gathering.  She suggested a monthly meeting of friends with the intent of constructing crafts as a group.  I am an artsy-craftsy person, though my concepts are nearly always better (and more finished) than the eventual product (if it even comes to fruition).  The thought of sitting down with a houseful of other crafty friends is enough motivation for me to crank out at least one artistic piece a month.  In my excitement, I even offered to host the gathering every few months.  However, in the aftermath of our conversation the thought dawned on me that I don’t really have a crafts-friendly area in my home…for me alone, not to mention ten or so other crafters.

Events such as our new formed monthly crafts group are the perfect occasions for an expandable table, such as the Cedar Lake Log Extending Dining Table with Leaf.  This rustic table is an art form in itself, and the beauty of natural cedar logs will certainly inspire my friends to bring out their inner artist.  It is available in several sizes and up to 2-24” leaves can be added for extra room when needed.  This means that the rustic furniture can comfortably fit my family of four on a daily basis, then when it’s time for me to host craft group, I can haul out the leaves and extra chairs and have plenty of room for everyone.  It is most advantageous, after all, to have everyone at the same table so we can share the wine and snacks while we chat and work on the craft of the day.  It’s so inconvenient to flit from one table to the next while we ladies are so “busy” perfecting our craft.
