Rustic Natural Cedar Solid Top Dining Table Model 221

A lot of people, including myself, often emphasized how important design is when it comes to furniture. However, design is but just one aspect that we should consider when choosing or buying furniture or furniture sets. After all, we don’t put-up furniture just for show.

This article is for the wise buyer.  She or he is the type of person that can juggle costs and benefits and make sure that she has the winning weight. It you are that kind of buyer or you want to be that kind of buyer, I’ve got some helpful stuff written here. These are tips on how to shop for the right furniture.

There are several things you must put in mind and must base your judgment upon whenever you try to purchase or even canvass for furniture. I have summed it up in three categories and I call it the “Furniture F.A.D.”

F for Functionality

Every furniture is made to be useful.  Beds and seating are made for user convenience and cabinets, shelves, etc. are made to contain smaller items at home. This should be your foremost consideration.  The best furniture is the one that best serves its function.

A recent trend has surfaced that gives the lime light to multifunctional furniture. As the name suggests, these furniture can serve not only one but other functions as well. This is best exemplified by tables with drawers, tundler beds, chairs that are convertible to tables, and the like.

A for Appeal

Appeal simply pertains to design. Remember that furniture is the most visible item in the house. Therefore, it should have a good appearance; a good look. Furniture should be handsome. This creates an impression of a handsome home. Just take a look at this good looking dining set on the left. It is the Rustic Natural Cedar Solid Top Dining Table Model 221. Browse through JHE’s Real Log Furniture Place website and see a lot of items that are as handsome as this one. It’s a feast for the eyes.

For tips on designs, read my other blogs because I have touched that topic for several times. I’m sure you’ll find a great deal of help in those.

D for Durability

On the practical side, you furniture should be able to serve its purpose for a long time. The best furniture is the one that is most durable. This means that your choice of furniture must b the ones that are not easily damaged or broken.

In that case, log furniture is the best choice. Log furniture can last until seven decades depending on the wood that’s used. A good example of this is Teak wood. Teak wood is the most durable among all types of wood. Its durability is very reliable that most outdoor furniture wood are preferred done with teak as material.  Teak also becomes better as it age. As I have said before, teak furniture is even passed down as heirloom.

But perhaps the important thing to remember here is that the more durable the furniture is, the more practical it is to purchase.

Working with Space

Friday, July 16th, 2010

I have noticed that large furniture are in demand nowadays. More and more people would want extra-sized bed, couch, cabinets, etc. I for one have started buying those myself and I should say that having large furniture can really enhance your house’s interior. However, I had one major concern about having and working with large furniture: SPACE.

If you are occupying an apartment or a loft which is rather small, or maybe your house is not as spacious, you might be having doubts about getting large furniture. I’m here to tell you that you can still pursue having them without the risk of crowding your small working space.  I have figured out the solutions in order to make things work for that specific situation.

Area

Let me first talk about how you can work on a small area. By area, I mean the floor area. If your floor area is small or narrow, here are my suggestions.

  1. Go for furniture sizes that are 1 degree lower than the largest size. For example, JHE’s Log Furniture Place offers 3 dimensions for sofas. They have 5-Foot, 6-Foot, and 7-Foot dimensions.  You don’t have to pick the largest. Choose the 6-foot sofa. In that way, it is still large but can definitely work on your space.
  1. Position your furniture near the walls. It will be best to even position some furniture parallel against your walls. This saves up more space than actually just placing them in the middle of your working area. If you have a large sofa or a large shelf, position their backs against walls till it even touches the wall. I have done this several times, and it works perfectly!

  1. Have bold furniture. When working with small spaces, have furniture that are bold in design. This creates an illusion of generous space. The color of your furniture should be solid. The shape of it must be as geometric as possible and the edges are neat. Furniture with contemporary style is an advisable choice. Below is an example of what I am saying. This is a picture of contemporary end table as designed by Groovy Stuff Teak Wood.

Groovy Stuff Teak Wood Taper Kodiak Side Table

Height

While some large furniture has an increased width only, many has increased length too or are taller. This applies particularly to cabinets and shelves. This scenario becomes a problem if you have low roofing.  In that case;

  1. Avoid installing hanging cabinets. It is best to just have standing furniture. In kitchens, for example, you can choose to have kitchen islands, a buffet and hutch, and floor cabinets. I know that buffet and hutch is commonly placed in the dining room, but they will do perfect in kitchens too. For very stylish buffet and hutches, check out Northwood’s Buffet and Hutch NWBH and Aspen Mountain’s Large Buffet and Hutch BT1.
  1. Choose furniture that are tall and thin. This will create an illusion of height to your otherwise small space. Just be sure that these furniture will not touch your roof. A distance of 1 foot between your roof and the top of your furniture is good. Remember, go for the thinner and taller kind.

Customize

If everything else fails, your best option is to customize. A little bit of trimming here and there would not hurt. Be sure to purchase furniture where they offer customization. Remember that good buys are those buys that perfectly meet your needs. Have a look at what can be the maximum furniture size that will work for your home and stick to it as possible.

The Odd Duck

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

As much as I love log homes, I can’t help but shake my head when I happen to pass by one that has been built in the middle of a big open field with no trees around it. The home is still beautiful and grand, but it looks so completely out of place without trees and nature around it. I guess you could almost call it the “odd duck”…kind of like a flock of white ducks with one mallard standing out from amidst the others.

So, if you have your heart set on a log home but only have a big open field in which to build it, how do you make your odd duck fit in with the flock? A good start is to plan and plant a nice windbreak of pine trees and shrubs all around the building site. Not only does the windbreak function as an anchor for the home, but it provides a much appreciated break from the wind and a home for some woodland creatures that you might like to watch through your windows. It also creates a visual wall between the field and your yard. Once the home is in place, you can plant more trees in the yard. This will add to the rustic feel of the home, provide some nice shade, and further ground the house into the building site. Landscaping around the home with shrubs, flowers, and grasses adds a nice touch of hominess to the yard, firmly grounds the home, and functions as a nice base to add outdoor furniture and décor. A flower garden and nice landscaping can certainly set off a home to make it go from average to having a nice wow factor.

Finally, because you have the rustic look and feel of the log home, add accents to the home that set off your theme. For instance, you can use log planter boxes on the porch or set your mailbox into the center of a nice big planter box. Create a nice sitting area some distance from the house with a log swing in the middle of a nice flower garden. Add some nice log sitting chairs to your front porch. Use your eye for design to strategically place rustic log accents around your beautiful home. If you follow this advice, your odd duck will be strutting just like the rest of the flock before too long.

Make it Contemporary

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

If you might have noticed, I’m more of a vintage-lover. I love everything that has history, everything classic and everything antique. For me, things that are vintage are more appealing and durable. In that sense, I consider having them as a more practical choice.

Nonetheless, I don’t shy away from the idea of incorporating modern or contemporary designs once in a while. The good thing about contemporary design is that it has certain warmth that almost sort of welcomes you. It is also a kind of design that is very versatile and easy to work with.

When we say contemporary design, we mean fundamentality, simplicity, subtle sophistication, and clean texture and lines. These are the basic features of the contemporary style.

Applying that to furniture, this kind of design is exhibited in furniture that has smooth texture, clean and neutral appearance, and geometric shape. We won’t often see a lot of details. Contemporary furniture pieces are very simple and shipshape. There should not be a lot of curves and decoration. Legs of furniture are also very exposed.

If you are a person who loves the clean, simple, warm, and shipshape look; contemporary design is perfect for you.

I have I have gone over the furniture at JHE’s Real Log Furniture Place and have found very interesting pieces with contemporary design. If I would have been more into the modern look, these are the pieces I would have had at home. But anyway, I would still like to share these new-found furniture pieces here to help readers who prefer the contemporary look on their hunt or search for the best furniture.

A Touch of Art

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

What else could brighten up a house than brilliant paintings that speak louder than words? Adorn your walls with rustic paintings and arts that would undeniably catch anyone’s attention. But how do you choose the right painting from the wrong ones, and where to perfectly put each of them that they don’t outshine each other? Well, here are a few tips on how to choose and arrange your paintings in the house.

  • PROPER PLANNING – Now, before rushing to an art store, it is better to make plans first before heading headfirst into a decision you might regret. One of the things that you must plan about is how many paintings you should buy and where to put them. Determining the places where to put paintings could help on how many you should purchase, like you want a majestic one in the living room, tiny ones in the bathroom and colorful ones in the kitchen. Everything would depend on your plan-making. Nothing could beat proper preparation to avoid any problems.
  • PERSONALITY – It’s all about, yes, personality and your own personal touch on the painting. Maybe not a touch but something in it that you can relate to. If you are a nature lover, you can choose paintings that are nature-themed, like wildlife ones, animals or forests. Choose a painting depending on your heart, if you feel like it speaks for you. Then you can proudly describe it to any guest or your friends, it would be easy if you know something personally about what’s in the picture.
  • AFFORDABILITY – A majestic painting doesn’t have to be THAT expensive, remember that. Even though those overly-priced ones are undoubtedly breathtaking, there’s still no reason to buy one like that if it cringes your budget. You may never know, by looking thoroughly, you can find great painting with lower prices.
  • QUALITY – This one is a must! You should always check about the quality of a painting, but if you don’t have any knowledge about checking it, then ask someone who knows. A little help won’t hurt and it can even lead to an advantage. Ask for referrals when looking for an art shop that sells good quality paintings that are as astounding as ever even if it could reach a hundred years old.
  • MATCHING THINGS UP - If you had found the best painting for your taste, then it is time to decide on where to put it. Just remember that your painting shouldn’t outshine anything, or worse, doesn’t shine at all. You must put a painting on a part of the wall where there is still a lot of space. Paintings shine brightest when they occupy their own space and don’t ruin the view. Be creative on arranging them and be surprised of the results.

If you are looking for a store that provides artistic and magnificent rustic furniture paintings and arts, then I’ll recommend JHE’s Log Furniture Place. It has an excellent collection of rustic paintings and arts along with their set of log furniture and accessories.

Some Assembly Required

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Aren’t those some dreaded words? It seems that many of the large items we order today require some assembly once we get them home. Sometimes we choose to avoid that step and pay to have someone else put them together for us. After considering the amount of stress that can occur with trying to juggle directions, parts and pieces, and tools that we may or may not have in our possession, sometimes we find that the price of assembly is far more than that of our own sanity and patience.

However, in today’s world of technology, internet shopping is becoming more and more prevalent. And that is for good reason. It is convenient, it is always open, and you can comparison shop freely…all from the comfort of your own home without having to put yourself together to go out in public. That freedom does come with its compromises, though. Even though frequently you find that you don’t have to pay sales tax on items you purchase over the internet, usually you do have to pay shipping costs. Consider yourself very lucky if you find a site that has an item that you want and you get the bonus of free shipping. JHE’s Log Furniture Place is one such site. Not only do they carry a large variety of log, rustic, and reclaimed furniture, but they also offer free shipping. This is important news to a consumer…sometimes the price of an item may be a bit more from a certain Vendor A, but when you consider free shipping it makes the item from Vendor A less expensive than the same item from Vendor B (whose price is less but charges shipping fees).

And then, particularly when purchasing large or oddly shaped items, there is usually “some assembly required”. The chill runs down your spine as you consider just how involved that assembly can be. For people such as my husband, assembly can be extremely stressful and time consuming. He just does not have that handyman gene that enables some to put furniture together without the benefit of instructions. Some people can just look at the pieces and parts, maybe a picture, and it goes together easily for them.

Recently I received a log chair from JHE’s Log Furniture Place. My “assembly-challenged” husband happened to be out of town when the shipment was delivered to my front porch. However, since I enjoy putting together puzzles and doing things with my hands, I decided to give it a whirl. It was a lazy Saturday evening and I welcomed the challenge. I am happy to report that about a half hour later, thanks to the supervision and guidance from the neighbor’s two little boys and our incredibly helpful Rat Terrier dog, I was sitting on the front porch happily in the fully assembled chair. The assembly process was almost as pleasant as the end result. It was fun to have the boys and the dog “help” me to put it together. I no longer dread the words “some assembly required”. And since then, I have assembled about three other items and have savored (nearly) every minute of it!

Tips on Revamping your Living Room

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The living room is a place in your house where the whole family can spend time together. It is usually the first place which you stay first after a long day of hard work. More often, family members will stay in this area to relax and watch a movie together. You also entertain your guests in this area.

How your living room looked like tells about your personality, your lifestyle and your taste. This is the reason why many families are willing to spend money in hiring an interior designer just to make the arrangement of their living room compliment their family’s personality, lifestyle and taste. However, for those who have a tight budget, revamping your living room should not be a burden. It should be something that you enjoy.

Although this task is not easy for many, accomplishing the task makes it very fulfilling. Here are some tips you can use to avoid stress and pressure and in order to make the experience memorable and at the same time pleasurable.

First of all, plan a theme for your living room. Arranging your living room is like writing an article, you start off with a theme so you will be guided along the way. Setting a theme guides you in purchasing the furniture you will be placing in your living room. This helps you decide the color, the material and the style of your furniture.

If you want to have a traditional log furniture look to represent the conservative personality of your family, you may want to consider the Cabin Creek collection. For a classical look to emphasize the elegant taste of your family, Aspen Mountain or the log furniture Cottage collection is the best. For a modern look to stress the contemporary lifestyle of your family, Rustic Lakeland or North Woods cabin furniture collection would be nice for your living room.

The next thing to consider is the size of your family and the size of your living room. You cannot waste money in buying furniture that does not fit in your living room as well as you cannot buy a furniture that is too small for the size of your family. Considering the size involves considering the shape of the rustic furniture table. Remember that a round table consumes a lot of space while a rectangular table allows you to save more.

You also need to consider your budget. There are a lot of furniture shops that allows you to choose from a variety of designs to help you plan your budget well. It is a good thing that there are websites available on the internet that offer log living room furniture packages. Availing these packages not only helps you control your budget, it also helps you decide which furniture goes well together.

Most importantly, put the right furniture in the right place. This means when you decide to buy cabin furniture for the living room, you must anticipate first its use. If you plan to buy a cabinet where you want place unused kitchen utensils then it is not for your living room.

When planning for your rustic living room, you must always look at things at the bird’s eye view. Do not just buy furniture simply because you think it is unique or it looks great. You must always make sure that the furniture you buy for your living room complement each other or else you would not be able to get the look you always want to have for your living room.

The Cost of Cheap Furniture – How to Find The Best Value in Outdoor Log Furniture

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Today I’m going to talk about how to get the most bang for your buck when shopping for outdoor log furniture.   It wasn’t that long ago that you could easily find quality outdoor cedar log furniture offered by quality craftsmen and companies.  It was built with care by people who had a passion for outdoor wooden furniture.  The wood of choice for most of these craftsmen is Northern White Cedar due to the unique characteristics that cedar has.  A piece of outdoor cedar furniture will survive in the open year round for 10 – 20 years depending on where you live.  While it is still possible to find well built outdoor log furniture, one must look a bit more carefully, as a lot of large corporate garden centers are looking to cash in on the unsuspecting and uninformed.

As happens in all markets large corporate retailers are looking to make more money.  In my opinion, they do not care so much about their customers as they do about keeping their shareholders happy.  So these corporate retailers exported some American made outdoor log furniture to China.  There they were able to imitate the look but not the quality or comfort.  They build cheap furniture using brittle log furniture made of Chinese Fir.  Why should this counterfeit log furniture be a concern to you?  Let’s take a look at Chinese fir and find out.

Chinese Fir is a prized timber tree in China.  It actually isn’t a fir but is from the evergreen species.  Chinese Fir is a fine wood to use for indoor décor use.  It is actually prized in China for the smell.  Outdoors though Chinese fir furniture becomes very brittle and can become unsafe very quickly, commonly within a year.

Imagine the top log rail of a log yard swing – the rail that supports the weight of the log swing and the people sitting in the swing seat.  If you were to sit 3 people down at once in a log swing the top rail is going to bend slightly.  With a Cedar swing the wood is soft enough to give slightly at the first weight variance.  It then snaps back into place – like a rubber band though with maybe ½” of movement.  Imagine now Chinese fir that is brittle and doesn’t like to bend.  Instead of bending these logs just break under the same weight load.

Another difference you will find is that some Chinese fir log furniture is made out of small 2” diameter logs with small tenons.  As we discussed in “What is a Mortise and Tenon” you know that the larger the tenon the stronger the log furniture.  Many of the samples we have seen of this imported Chinese fir log furniture have also had mold on the logs from where the log furniture was built using wet logs and then packaged up and shipped over.

Lastly Chinese fir furniture just does not hold up as well out in the direct elements of nature as cedar log furniture does .  I bought two Chinese fir Adirondack chairs 3 years ago for testing.  I placed one of these in a covered and screened in deck.  The other was left outside.  The Chinese fir chair that was left outdoors lasted for 8 months.  The Chinese fir chair that was placed in the screened in deck is now 3 years old and is starting to show signs of weakness.  To give a comparison I have had a cedar Adirondack chair out in the open for 7 years now and it still is strong and sturdy.  I’ve had cedar log furniture outdoors for the same 7 years and it also is as strong and sturdy as it was when new.  In our enclosed deck I have 9 year old cedar log furniture that as of right now I’m guessing will last another 15 to 20 years just by the way it looks now.

Which wood has the best value in outdoor log furniture?

Quality North American outdoor cedar log furniture or Chinese fir log furniture?  Let’s compare log swings and see:

American 5ft Country Garden Cedar Log Swing

    • life span of 9 – 15 years
    • cost of $290 including free shipping.
    • At the minimum estimated life span we get $32.33 a year.

Imported Chinese 5ft Chinese Fir Log Swing

    • life span of 1 – 2 years
    • cost of $175 at a local large retail store.
    • At the max estimated life span we get $87.50 a year.

I would say the answer is easily American made Cedar Log Furniture.

Weight limits of cedar log furniture vs Chinese fir log furniture

Now figure that both swings are 3 person swings.  Our American made cedar log swing has a weight limit of 700 lbs, the imported Chinese fir swing has a weight limit of 300 lbs.  Can you even swing with your loved one on a Chinese fir log swing safely?

What is the cost of safety to you?  To me it is quite a bit – luckily as shown I can purchase the cedar log swing and it will not only be safer but will be a better value to me long term.  It will actually save me money.

Do you care about buying American made furniture?  So do I.  I’m grateful that I am able to buy American quality cedar log furniture and it will actually save me money and will support local businesses and local craftsmen who care about quality in log furniture.  Think about the long term when you purchase.  These large corporate garden centers are betting that the American public is ignorant and will just look to the bottom dollar.

At JHE’s Log Furniture Place we care about you and we care about log furniture.  You will not find dangerous imported Chinese fir outdoor log furniture on our website.  Chances are you have a local smaller garden center who believes in buying American as well.  Now that you know the difference between Chinese fir and Cedar furniture, what the real cost of cheap furniture is, you will be able to determine for yourself what the best value is when shopping for outdoor log furniture.

How to Lend Your Home A Rustic Decor Theme

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Rustic decor is a look that many people aspire to or choose as a theme when decorating or redecorating part of their home. They choose the style because it is homely, simple and can lead to a warm and welcoming space.

The first thing to examine when looking to decorate in a rustic style is what the term ‘rustic decor’ means to you. For many people it conjures up visions of log cabins, country farmhouses and Shaker style kitchens. However, most of us now do not have exposed wooden beams in our houses, and so we must tailor our rustic decor to suit the architectural style of our surroundings.

True rustic decor comes in various different themes and time periods. You could, for example, choose a colonial or country theme, or pick a romantic Victorian theme.

Colonial and country rustic decor is based on a very utilitarian style. Items are practical and useful, and decoration and themes are simple and clean. A country or colonial themed room can be dressed with items such as handmade quilts and tablecloths, earthenware pottery, and ‘folk art’ style paintings. For the more extreme decorator, you could choose a conversation piece such as a stuffed moose head or pair or antlers!

Victorian style rustic decor is more romantic and not quite so utilitarian. Try dressing your room with wicker baskets, and look for flounced or ruffled curtains, tablecloths and bedding. Think beautifully embroidered white bedding on a dark framed wooden bed, or delicate flower sprigged curtains in a kitchen.

The advantage of rustic decor as a theme for your interior design project is that you can do as much or as little as you like. The whole room or house can be rustic themed, or you can simply use a few carefully selected accent pieces to bring a rustic feel to a neutrally decorated room.

You can even use functional rustic pieces to recreate the lifestyle of the period – many old fashioned pastimes are getting a new lease of life and can be integrated into your theme. For example, why not purchase an old fashioned table based sewing machine, or even a spinning wheel? Or for a less extreme solution, how about a wicker basket in your room to keep your knitting wool and knitting needles in?

One of the keys to a rustic theme is to include plenty of natural materials. These can be functional (wooden blinds, wicker baskets) or decorative (a dried flower centerpiece, or a spray of twigs in a vase). The natural materials can be used to achieve the impression of ‘bringing the outside inside,’ which is used to great effect by many of the decorators and room designers on television design programmes.

The key to rustic décor is to do what works for you. Don’t shy away from including something in your theme because you don’t feel it counts as traditional rustic; just integrate it into your overall design. There are no hard and fast rules for a rustic theme, so get designing and enjoy it!

How To Take Care of Your Copper Sink

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Are you worried about purchasing a copper sink because you think there will be a lot of work involved in taking care of it?  Don’t worry, so are a lot of other people.  By now you have read my blog on ‘How to Find and Choose a Quality Copper Sink’ so you know how to find and pick out a quality copper sink.  If not I highly suggest that you take a minute and read that blog…. All done?  Great!  Let’s dig in and find out how to care for your quality copper sink.

How To Maintain Your Quality Copper Sink

I’m going to start out with a quick statement: I’m going to stop saying quality copper sink now because you know the difference between copper sinks – all references to copper sinks = quality copper sinks.

You are going to love this next sentence… When it comes to the general maintenance of a copper sink, the less you do to the sink the better.  Copper sinks do not require polishing or scrubbing.  Due to the tempering of the copper to a patina finish, your copper sink will feature an aged, weathered look.  No need to polish the sink because the weathered look is the desired look.  Now there are a few things you can do to keep your copper sink looking its best.

  1. Copper Sink Wax:  Copper sink wax is an easy to use sprayable wax which helps alleviate a lot of the cleaning requirements.  The sprayable waxes you will want to use will spray a natural bee’s wax.  The surface protecting wax will clean, protect, preserve and restore the luster of your copper sink.

How often should you apply the copper sink wax?  The best way to tell is to watch the sink, whenever water stops beading on the surface it is time to spray it again.

No copper wax on hand? No worries, here are a few more tips:

  1. Rinsing:  After you are finished using your copper sink, give it a quick rinse.
  2. Wipe the Copper Sink Out:  Do you live in an area that has a lot of mineral content in the water?  If you have hard harsh water it is a good idea to wipe the sink out.  Hard water, if left to sit on your copper sink’s surface for too long, can cause spots to form.
  3. If you ever need more than a rinse to clean your copper sink just use a soft cloth and a very mild cleaner.  Anything abrasive can scratch the copper sink which isn’t good, but a scratch isn’t the end of the world.

My Copper Sink Got A Scratch!

The fact that copper sinks looks more beautiful with age is amazing enough, but the idea that copper sinks can heal themselves is almost unbelievable! It is true though.  If you happen to scratch your copper sink, don’t worry, just sit back and do nothing.

Due to coppers ‘living finish’, the copper sink will heal itself.  Just maintain your copper sink as we instructed above.  In time the scratches on the sink will fade out and disappear.

Do Copper Sinks Dull with Age?

Copper improves with age, unlike many other things which will dull and lose their luster with age.  As time goes by your patina finish, that beautiful weathered look will deepen and become richer.  The more use your copper sink gets, the faster it will age.

Amazing Fact

Copper is a natural antibacterial.  Unlike stainless steel sinks, copper sinks actually fight bacteria.  It has recently been proved that bacteria can only live on copper sinks for a few hours.  Bacteria can live on stainless steel for several days!  Your copper sink can be thought of as self cleaning as far as germs go.

With all of the wonderful qualities that copper sinks possess, it is hard to believe that everyone would not want a copper sink!  Copper sinks require little maintenance, they improve with age, they are antibacterial, and they heal themselves.  Along with adding a beautiful unique look to any bathroom, kitchen or bar copper sinks are the easiest type of sink to maintain.
