Christmas is for Cabins

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Aren’t Christmas decorations one of the best things about the holiday? They are so beautiful and festive, lovely scented evergreen boughs with twinkling lights interspersed. Something as simple as a pine wreath with a big red bow can put me in a better mood immediately. The simplicity of such a wreath speaks warmly of the true meaning of Christmas.

Greenery makes any location look festive, but it takes on a homey holiday charm when it is hung outside of a cabin. Maybe the timber of the log home is happy to see some of the boughs it lost, or maybe when both parts of the tree are rejoined they create their own special kind of holiday magic. Whatever the reason, a cabin adorned with Christmas decorations looks and feels like the perfect holiday setting.

A great place to begin festooning the cabin is by hanging swags of pine boughs on the deck and porch railings. Well-placed bows accentuate the delicate needles of the greenery. Outdoor planter boxes can be filled with evergreen boughs and twinkling lights for a nice holiday accent around your entryway. For a romantic touch, hang a nice sprig of mistletoe from the top of the garden arbor. Don’t forget to bring the outside in by placing a vase of pine sprigs on your coffee table. Use more of those sprigs and perhaps some additional twinkling lights to create a dazzling centerpiece on your dining room table. And, perhaps of utmost importance, designate the best location in the cabin for the Christmas tree. The tree should be able to be enjoyed from every seat in the house.

This Christmas, enjoy the simplicity cabin decor in your home for the holidays. The time you spend hanging pine boughs is best enjoyed with family and friends, maybe followed by a nice mug of hot cocoa. And remember, all homes look wonderful when wrapped in greenery. But, in my honest opinion, Christmas greenery looks best when hung on cabins.

Rustic Natural Cedar Solid Top Dining Table Model 221

A lot of people, including myself, often emphasized how important design is when it comes to furniture. However, design is but just one aspect that we should consider when choosing or buying furniture or furniture sets. After all, we don’t put-up furniture just for show.

This article is for the wise buyer.  She or he is the type of person that can juggle costs and benefits and make sure that she has the winning weight. It you are that kind of buyer or you want to be that kind of buyer, I’ve got some helpful stuff written here. These are tips on how to shop for the right furniture.

There are several things you must put in mind and must base your judgment upon whenever you try to purchase or even canvass for furniture. I have summed it up in three categories and I call it the “Furniture F.A.D.”

F for Functionality

Every furniture is made to be useful.  Beds and seating are made for user convenience and cabinets, shelves, etc. are made to contain smaller items at home. This should be your foremost consideration.  The best furniture is the one that best serves its function.

A recent trend has surfaced that gives the lime light to multifunctional furniture. As the name suggests, these furniture can serve not only one but other functions as well. This is best exemplified by tables with drawers, tundler beds, chairs that are convertible to tables, and the like.

A for Appeal

Appeal simply pertains to design. Remember that furniture is the most visible item in the house. Therefore, it should have a good appearance; a good look. Furniture should be handsome. This creates an impression of a handsome home. Just take a look at this good looking dining set on the left. It is the Rustic Natural Cedar Solid Top Dining Table Model 221. Browse through JHE’s Real Log Furniture Place website and see a lot of items that are as handsome as this one. It’s a feast for the eyes.

For tips on designs, read my other blogs because I have touched that topic for several times. I’m sure you’ll find a great deal of help in those.

D for Durability

On the practical side, you furniture should be able to serve its purpose for a long time. The best furniture is the one that is most durable. This means that your choice of furniture must b the ones that are not easily damaged or broken.

In that case, log furniture is the best choice. Log furniture can last until seven decades depending on the wood that’s used. A good example of this is Teak wood. Teak wood is the most durable among all types of wood. Its durability is very reliable that most outdoor furniture wood are preferred done with teak as material.  Teak also becomes better as it age. As I have said before, teak furniture is even passed down as heirloom.

But perhaps the important thing to remember here is that the more durable the furniture is, the more practical it is to purchase.

Unforgettable Home Moments

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

There is always something fantastic about having your own house. There is the feeling of independence, sophistication and most of all, comfort of having your own place. So when my husband and I got our house, I really went hands-on when it comes to designing all the furniture and appliances. I made sure that everything’s in the right places, and that we bought and brought just the right stuffs. When buying furniture and appliances, my key tips would be convenience and space-saving. So, when we decided to stick on a country/barn-like theme for our house, I was very thrilled. Log and barn wood furniture are top on my list when it comes to elegance at interior designing.

The place where I was very keen to put into perfection was the kitchen. Cleanliness is a must in my kitchen, so I made every spot, every nook and cranny accessible. The only way to do that was to choose the appropriate stuffs and putting them at the right places. Of course, I chose the best sophisticated looking wood kitchen cabinets. Their varnished appearance suited well with the theme on our house, which I was really delighted about. Even the kitchen islands were fantastic. They did not clash with the cabinets but went fine with it. The combination was expected as wood furniture is easy on the eyes but classy on the same time.

Designing and furnishing the kitchen is indeed very unforgettable. We worked on it with love and unity that our hard work came out perfectly. The kitchen was so superb with its barn wood furniture, aside from the design and appearance, its quality also lasts for a very long time as long as it is always handled with care. Any furniture and appliance won’t last long when the owners are responsible enough, so quality is still half the responsibility of owners. Still, barn wood furniture is known to last a fair deal of time. I am so proud of what we did on the kitchen and proud of the moment we official said that it was fully furnished and incredible! Make unforgettable moments in your houses too, you will never be disappointed.

The Heart of the Home

North Woods Custom Kitchen Cabinets

North Woods Custom Kitchen Cabinets

I am an avid viewer of home remodeling and home buying television shows. I become fascinated with watching designers and architects work their magic. These artists can meet with the existing or potential homeowners and create a space that is a direct reflection of the homeowners’ personalities. Sometimes they are even able to achieve a drastic change of the existing space without spending a lot of money, and I watch carefully so that I’m able to achieve those same types of things for our home.

One of the recurring themes in each of those shows is the kitchen. I find that to be especially true when the show focuses on a couple or family that is shopping for a new home. Often times the matriarch of the family refers to the kitchen as “the heart of the home”. Truly, that is often the room where the entire family gathers. The same can be said of friends who come to visit. Next time you attend a party at a friend’s home, notice where you will find most of the people. They are typically close to either the food or drink.

So, naturally a room that receives as much attention as the kitchen is one that is typically large, spacious, efficient, and well-furnished. Rustic cabinets are usually custom-made for the space and function for which they are needed. Islands are a great way to incorporate more workspace into the kitchen without closing off traffic. Kids can pull a stool up to the counter and relax with a snack while watching mom cook. Friends can gather round and enjoy a pizza while discussing yesterday’s football game. Accessories can provide further function and character to the kitchen. A rustic pot rack hanging above the stove or island can provide storage and display space, while a copper sink can provide a handy place to wash dishes, fill pots, or rinse off bar utensils.

I believe it is true that for most homes, the kitchen provides the heartbeat of the family. Many conversations and wonderful memories are made in that space. Traditions and family recipes are created, recreated, and tweaked. Laughter and chatter commonly fill the empty spaces. It’s not so much a room as the soul of a family.

DIY Style

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

In a recent issue of a log cabin magazine, I noticed some pictures that really caught my eye and piqued my interest. Usually when I see photos of cabins, they are comprised of a lot of wood and rustic metal elements. However, in some of these photos I saw a real mishmash of contemporary and country style. Stainless steel and rustic log had come together to make a new and fresh version of the traditional log furniture.

It made me wonder, what kind of style does the builder of a log cabin need to have? I guess until now I had figured that he or she had to like a whole lot of wood and had to settle for an outdoorsy kind of feel in the décor. After all, I see a lot of chandeliers made out of antlers and bronze or copper sinks when I am looking at cabin photos. But one of the cardinal rules of decorating a house is to make it a reflection of you. And if you like contemporary elements in your home, why not incorporate those in with the rustic feel of logs?

Now, granted, if you are a fan of strictly contemporary architecture, you likely will not be shopping for log furniture at all. However, the look and feel of some teak furniture can give you that edgy personality that most contemporary fans like. I happen to be a person that likes quite a variety of styles in my home…we have furniture that is everything from a contemporary glass and stainless steel table to primitive country accents. And it works for us, because we have an affinity for all of those different styles. Granted, we are beginning to transition to a more traditional style, but for now everything is living together in harmony.

So, whether you like contemporary or country, rustic or artistic, you can decorate your home in a style that is truly your own. Don’t be afraid to mix stainless steel and rustic logs, or a glass top with a teak bottom. Just be sure that the styles you incorporate are a distinct reflection of you.

The Amazing Pine Tree

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

A television commercial caught my eye the other day. A candidate for Georgia governor was talking about the pine forests that cover the state and how they could be even more beneficial to the Georgia economy. He pointed out that Georgia could be home to the next renewable fuel source. This, in part, could help to eliminate the need for our country to rely on oil. This is a sensitive time for all Americans, in the midst of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Even President Obama informed, as he addressed our nation, that we need to actively pursue alternative sources of fuel. Fuel pellets made of pine are one way to move towards a renewable and clean method of powering residential or commercial stoves specially modified to burn pellets. This is a fuel source that is manufactured from wood byproducts, forest thinning byproducts, and other biomass ingredients. It is renewable because we have the ability to replant pine forests over and over again and retain the source of fuel accordingly.

This latest bit of information helps to give me a whole new appreciation for the pine forests that cover Georgia. Not only do those trees provide us with beautiful rustic furniture, but now a renewable fuel source that will aid our country in moving away from reliance on oil. While seeing the forests stripped of trees makes me extremely sad, I can rest assured that those forests are replanted and regrowing within a few short years. The wildlife that calls those trees home can move to a neighboring forest until their original home begins to rebuild. Their future is much brighter than the birds and fish that are becoming mired in the oil of the Gulf.

We, as consumers, can help to nurture the pine forest industry by purchasing the products that it provides. We may not have the need for pine fuel pellets, but we can certainly consider adding pine furniture to our dining rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, and other parts of our homes. If you have flower gardens, you can use pine mulch to beautify them and keep them weed-free. There are many different ways to incorporate the amazing pine tree into your daily life. Please consider this renewable industry the next time you make a furniture purchase.

An Alternative Investment

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Lately it seems that at least two or three times a week, something about the banking or investment companies makes the news headlines. It is a shaky time to make investments, what with the stock market always seeming to swing to and fro. I have heard numerous stories about normal everyday people who have invested money for their retirement, only to lost most or all of it in the economic turmoil that has been gripping our country. It makes me wonder if those folks who bury their money in a tin can in the backyard might be onto something after all.

There are options to invest your money a little more safely. I’m not even going to pretend that I’m a financial genius, or even that I’m smart with my money. But I know that if I have a good chance of losing most or all of the money I am banking on for my retirement, I’m going to look for alternatives. I have been told for years that real estate is a smart way to go, that you will almost always realize a gain on your money after some time. But watching the housing market these days is like watching a ping pong game. Some say buying gold is the wise man’s way to invest. However, I’ve heard that gold prices have also done a nose dive. What is a person to do?

Your own personal investment choice is up to you. But I do know that putting your money into well-built items that will withstand the test of time is a smart way to spend. For many years I’ve been know to quote the mantra “you get what you pay for”. That can be taken both in a literal sense as well as figuratively. Take, for instance, furniture. I have, in the past, purchased items for my home that look pretty nice but are actually just pieces of particle board that have a nice veneer glued over the top of them. How well do you think those pieces last? Not too long before breaking, especially when a person moves as often as I do. So the better sense is to spend a little more money initially for furniture that is going to last two to three times longer. When you break down your investment over the course of time, you are actually spending your money more wisely on the well-made, solid wood furniture.

The furniture that is sold by JHE’s Log Furniture Place can be considered a safe and sound investment. Their log and rustic furniture carries a 100% satisfaction guarantee and is made in the good old U S of A. As an added bonus, they feature free shipping. The money that you are spending is spent on the rustic furniture itself, and not on the trucking and freight that brings the furniture to you. Best of all, the solid wood furniture is made to last for a very long time, just like the mighty trees in the forest. In today’s tough economy, maybe you should consider an alternative investment like solid log furniture.

Keurig Coffee, K-Cups and My-Kap

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Today a short and sweet post having nothing to do with log furniture or rustic furniture!

So for Christmas my wife and I were gifted with a Keurig Coffee Machine.  A convenient coffee maker which uses K-Cups (small individual cups which have a paper filter and ground coffee).  The coffee maker is great, however, we like a specific blend of coffee which is not offered in a K-Cup.  We bought and played with Keurig’s mesh reusable K-Cup but were not all that impressed (it makes very weak coffee in my opinion).  I then stumbled across the My-Kap on Amazon.  It looked promising and the reviews were great so we ordered a set.  What a simple and easy to use invention!  We are able to use our own grounds now and we save from not having to buy as many K-Cups.

If you have a Keurig Coffee maker and are looking to use your own grounds I highly recommend the My-Kap.   Browse the My-Kap site and when you order your own set let David know that Jason from JHE’s says hi.

My-Kap receives our 5 tree award!
